Teaching Elementary vs Secondary for someone with flat affect?
Hi! I hope this is an okay place to post this. Im studying to work with children and im looking for opinions on wether someone with autism who has trouble being very expressive would be a better fit for older or younger children? And to a slightly lesser extent, someone who struggles with reading sarcasm, which i know older kids are prone to lol.
Tldr; i have flat affect and im worried young children will struggle to bond with me, but struggle with reading sarcasm/jokes and am worried itd make working with sarcasm-prone teens difficult.
Wondering which sounds like a better fit, or if im totally overthinking it due to being insecure about my autistic traits. Or if these traits might make me unsuitable to be a teacher altogether.
Long version:
I am autistic and have always been described as stoic. As a result i know i wont be able to be the overly expressive super animated type of teacher I've seen a fair amount of.
Do you think young children will find it difficult to connect with a teacher who struggles to emote? Will it be confusing and potentially detrimental if my words dont match my expression? I do my best to show my support and feelings with my words, but i know my facial expressions dont convey the same level of energy and emotion that many peoples do.
As a kid and now adult, others have found my generally stoic expressions mixed with my "dry humor" (some is humor, lots is taking and saying things literally due to the autism, which was undiagnosed until adulthood) to be absolutely hilarious, but im not sure that will transfer to kids. Im thinking maybe highschool students will find it funny and not mind my laid back, low energy, slightly sarcastic vibe, but ive always had a love for younger children and would prefer to work with them i think. Theyre more honest, straightforward, and easier to read. Plus theyre super cute and ive always wanted a child but am not sure i can handle the full responsibility, so i love working with them.
My general experince with kindergarten-elementary age kids has been that children like me well enough and have never expressed that theyre offput by my lack of expressiveness, but that might be different between a few hours of watching over them vs months of teaching them. Kinda like a older sibling vs authority figure vibe? Your big sister is laid back and cool, but you want a certain amount of emotional feedback from an adult right?
Am i overthinking this entirely? Would it be best i stick with older kids who might better understand the lack of emoting. I really love babies and elementary aged kids, but i know they learn lots from their environment and im worried id be a negative influence when i cant mirror their expressiveness/give them something to mirror. I do my best but im told even what i consider a smile is barely anything. I express what i feel and mean with words, e.g. "You're doing so well, good job" said with a straight face and flat tone. I think i could give a bit more emotion if i practiced lots, but it'd never be super exaggerated and high energy.
Again, sorry if im rambling and totally overthinking it. I need to decide if i want to major in elementary or secondary education (and what subject minor) and ive been torn up wondering which i should focus on. I guess im also worried some aspects of my autism will make a worse teacher and its making me spiral a little. Thanks for any input or advice.
