"Naturally artificial"generated desert

I don't know if this is a bug, but I was roaming around in a new world, and I noticed the desert background in the forest

It happens that there is most likely 200+ blocks of sand in that pile below thus, making this tiny region a desert. I know that when you have a lot of sand in one spot the biome changes to desert, but I don't know if this naturally ocurring is intentional.
