After a lifetime on console, I’m finally building my first PC at 25 — long-term plan, building in March
I’ve been on console since I was a young kid and I’m finally building my first PC at 25. I’ve spent the last few weeks researching and putting together a build and long-term upgrade plan. I’m building in March, so I’m looking for a final sanity check before I pull the trigger.
Goals 1440p gaming with 60 FPS as a hard floor (not the ceiling) Primarily single-player / co-op games (RPGs, open-world, soulslikes, indies) Quiet, cool, reliable system Long ownership horizon with planned upgrades, not constant rebuilds No heavy modding — casual achievement hunter
PART 1: CURRENT BUILD CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 9600X (Zen 5) Cooler: Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO Motherboard: MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi (PCIe 5.0 / WiFi 7) RAM: Crucial Pro Overclocking 32GB DDR5-6000 CL36 GPU: PowerColor Reaper RX 9060 XT (16GB) Storage: Samsung 990 PRO 1TB (PCIe Gen4) PSU: Corsair RM1000x (ATX 3.1) Case: Phanteks XT Pro Ultra (4×140mm fans) Monitor: Acer Nitro XV272U V (1440p / 180Hz IPS) Peripherals: SteelSeries Apex 3 TKL & Rival 3 (Gen 2) Extras: 1500VA UPS Aesthetic: all black, subtle RGB (royal purple), no top fans
PART 2: INITIAL SETUP (abridged) EXPO enabled, PBO on, Re-Size BAR enabled Fan curves tuned for silence until ~60°C Memory Context Restore enabled after first boot FreeSync enabled, Chill cap set just below refresh rate Windows updates set to notify (not auto-install)
PART 3: LONG-TERM ROADMAP 2027–2028 (minor refresh) -Add 2TB SSD (move current 1TB to secondary slot) -Peripheral upgrades 2030–2032 (major refresh) -Final AM5 CPU upgrade -GPU upgrade -Increase RAM to 64GB -Upgrade to 4K OLED monitor (will retreat back to 1440p later if needed) 2033–2036 -Replace CMOS battery -Replace PSU 2037 -Resolution retreat back to 1440p if 4K becomes unreasonable 2040 -Retire to home/secondary PC and build new main rig
Notes / Assumptions I’m aware plans can change based on tech/market shifts — this is a framework, not a promise. I know CL30 RAM exists; I don’t feel the premium is worth it for my use. 2TB storage prices aren’t great right now, so I’ll expand later. I’m intentionally overbuilding power, cooling, and platform longevity.
Looking for: Any real concerns I might’ve missed. Conflicts I haven’t accounted for. Things that might bite me long-term. I’m pretty locked in on part choices unless there’s a strong reason not to be. Appreciate any input.
