Japanese Mystery

In the Seventies, staying home sick from school, I saw a black and white film that appeared to be a Japanese production, with subtitles. There was a married couple; dressed in kimonos; not any Western style clothing; the man seemed to eat excessively and put some kind of sauce on everything. His wife seemed to plead with him to not be so gluttonous. He died soon after; she was upset at his burial and she seemed to struggle afterwards. Does anyone recognize these plot elements? I realize it’s not much detail.
