Real newb question

hello, I have gta 5 from the Rockstar launcher. I plugged in a Xbox controller to my PC. I start the game and everything is fine, but during the bank robbery I have to change character, and it says I need to press Alt+L. I thought there is a easy way to let the game know I'm playing with a controller, but for the life of me, I can't see the option, and usually a game can tell when you play with a controller. How do I get my tips for controller instead of k+M? TY and sorry I know this is a dumb question.
