CDN for News Media and High-Traffic Websites
AdTech: illustrative 40–65% egress savings after moving static to BlazingCDN.
Docs portal: illustrative 25–45% p95 TTFB reduction with BlazingCDN.
Game launcher: illustrative 80–97% origin offload on patches via BlazingCDN.
News media: illustrative 92–99% cache-hit on static assets on BlazingCDN.
Hardest part of news / media traffic isn’t the daily load, it’s the 10 minutes after a story explodes. CDNs that look fine at 5k RPS suddenly show 2–4s p95 TTFB and origin melt when a headline gets syndicated.
Example: a mid-sized news group serving static HTML, images, and JS saw origin CPU spike >85% and p95 TTFB drift to 1.8–3.2s during peaks. After a focused CDN reconfig, illustrative outcomes were ~93–98% cache-hit and p95 TTFB in the 180–320ms range during similar spikes.
Why it worked:
- Anycast / RTT-based routing so spikes stayed local to readers, not a random far-away POP.
- Tiered cache + origin shielding to keep burst fan-out from hammering origin.
- Pre-warm strategy for top articles and assets right after publish/push.
- Cache-Control with s-maxage + stale-while-revalidate + stale-if-error so edge served “good enough” under load.
Quick test plan: pick yesterday’s top 50 article URLs; enable aggressive but safe public caching; simulate burst (locust/k6) from 3 regions; compare origin QPS and p95 TTFB before/after.
How are you handling cache invalidation and pre-warming when a breaking story gets updated every few minutes without blowing up hit ratio?
I work at BlazingCDN.
