What’s the consensus on Ribaa?

Just curious because I do think Interest is generally evil and I don’t think the other abrahamic religions have it? Why did this ruling come about? Is there a specific reason? I mean it’s the only good ruling that came out of islam but i’m curious to why? was it for personal self interest or was it for the entirety of the community in those times
