Why does my commuter train lose power when crossing a switch?

When joining the main line from a branch line, my class 323 loses power for about a second. The lights dim, the engines spool down, and it feels like we're coasting until we rejoin the main. Are joints unpowered? Would that not be dangerous for slow-moving trains?
