What makes a vehicle Un-mountable?

Trying a mobile infantry playstyle but not able to consistently tell what makes vehicles unable to be entered by infantry.

Short barrel tank gun seems to be a no no so I thought if the heavy weapon slot is taken then no infantry, but a laser lance is fine? So medium weapons are fine but heavy aren't? Is there an indicator or tag on some equipment that I'm missing?
