I think I need to euthanize my cat

Starting 2 1/2 years ago our then 11-year-old cat began peeing and pooping in inappropriate places despite having three separate litter boxes throughout the house. He also lost 20% of his body weight and he went from a dark black to an almost chocolatey brown. We took them to get his thyroid checked April 2024 and the doctor said the test results were inconclusive.

Since then, he has continued, we’ve put spike strips in various corners throughout the house, but unfortunately, we can’t be in all places and we can’t spike strip everything. We’ve tried every conceivable scent and spray. We’ve tried sprays to keep him from peeing at various locations, and despite practically coating things in spay away, he does it anyway.

He has chosen my son‘s bedroom closet to pee in the corner and when we close the closet door, he pees on the door despite the fact that there is a litter box literally 2 inches away next to the closet door.

At this point we have had nearly $1000 in carpet damage. There are certain rooms in the house that now reek of urine and every day at least once a day he vomits.

Most recently he will approach one of his litter boxes look at the litter box and then poop directly in front of the litter box. Yes, we have ramps. He jumps around. This is not a question of his physical ability to get into the box he can get in the box he can get out of the box. He just pooped right next to the box.

He eats well he purrs he cuddles he drinks water he moves around, but we cannot afford thousands of dollars in thyroid medication and tests upon tests upon tests.

My wife is indicated she wants to take him to the vet next week and have him put to sleep she believes he is suffering from dementia and that he has simply confused and unable to identify litter boxes, although he will occasionally go in a litter box that is at this point no better than a 50-50 proposition.

What are we supposed to do? I can’t afford thousands of dollars here.
