Getting one of the endings

Sorry if this has already been asked. Tried to Google it but everything was talking about the romance lol.

I'm working on getting the achievement for doing all of the endings. Do I need to romance Alistair in order for him to die killing the archdemon? I don't really want to on this save, but I can if that's the only way to do it.
