I’m just really struggling with Guard. Is my list not helping?

Ok I’m getting hammered at the moment with my new Guard list. I’ve played marines before and did alright! I’m playing Russ commanders as the blank in the durn I feel is worth it to allow me to bully my way along the table. Enginseer goes with the LRTC. 20 man blob with command squad. I seem to lack killing power into units mainly due to such poor AP. Horses are great if I get them in but I’ve taken out a land raider Lancer with them and a Haurospex screemer killer in one charge too, plus I just like them!! Ten man Cadian squads are screens.
