Roth 401K vs traditional at 50 years old
My husband has a Roth 401K through his employer. I'm trying to determine if it makes sense for us to move his contributions to the Roth vs traditional.
Info:
- He turns 50 this month and we plan to retire in 10-12 years.
- Traditional 401K balance ~ $1.5M
- My solo 401K balance ~ $650K
- Roth IRAs balances ~ $140K
- Taxable brokerage account ~$100K
- His salary will be $190-$200K
- My SE income will be roughly $50K between my w-2 wages and net income; depending on if I contribute to my solo 401K
- Due to a couple things, 2025 tax bracket looks to have creeped into the 24% bracket, this was with ~$22K in his 401K contributions and
- Expected spending in retirement ~$125/year (probably overstated since houses will be paid off).
Trying to determine if it makes sense to start contributing to his Roth 401K (~$31K) or keep traditional. His company contributes 10% of his salary (not a match).
Is this the time where we get a tax advisor involved or are we still too far from retirement?
Thanks again for all your help!
