how do you keep evil out of your lives?

i am concerned evil is entering my life, and i already prayed, but i’m worried i didn’t do it well enough because i’m scared i still feel it. evil does many bad things to you. my other problem is that even though i desperately want to be humble because i know it’s part of god’s plan and god created me, we are all nothing compared to him, my mind poses intrusive thoughts of smugness that basically are challenging god to humble me, even though i truly want to be humble and those thoughts aren’t a representation what i want .
