Business Use Insurance Gap

Hi all,

Came across some analysis on a motor insurance gap that seems particularly relevant with the rise of hybrid and flexible working, and thought it was worth sharing here. It's a simple oversight that could have massive consequences.

The issue is the gap between a standard "commuting" policy and what's legally required for "business use". Many of us have policies for Social, Domestic, Pleasure & Commuting, which covers driving to and from a single, permanent place of work.

The problem is that "business use" is defined much more broadly than most people think. It's not just for sales reps. It can include things like:

  • Driving to a meeting at a client's office
  • Visiting another site or branch of your own company
  • Running a work-related errand, like a trip to the bank or post office
  • Driving between different locations as part of your role

If you have an accident while doing any of these on a standard commuting policy, your insurer could be entitled to invalidate your cover entirely. This means you could become personally liable for all costs, which can be astronomical in a serious incident, not to mention the legal trouble.

The analysis suggests over a third of UK workers who use their personal car for work might be in this position without realising it, often because their job has become more flexible since they first took out their policy.

Full disclosure: these insights are from a guide I work on.

It made me double-check my own policy. Has anyone here had to add business use cover, and were you surprised by what it included or how it affected your premium?
