How do you explain the distinction between pruning and trimming to a homeowner?

Been getting a lot of calls lately, and people are using the terms “trimming” and “pruning” interchangeably. Then they get confused when I start discussing different issues, structure vs. looks. Normally, when asked about what trimming an orchard involves, I say shaping and clearance work, and pruning relates more to trees and safety. But half the time, they say, "Just make it look nice," with no idea of long-term effects.

There are some resources available that explain both methods pretty well, which can be nice for when the client wants more information themselves. But in real life, how do you explain this to people without sounding patronizing?

Do you even take the time to explain the difference, or do you just evaluate what the tree actually requires and continue educating as you are going along? Curious as to how other arborists handle the client on a basic such as this.
