The AI companion space is full of opportunities

Informative

Hey everyone,

I track software demand keywords as a side project to spot opportunities early. The AI companion space has got interesting recently.

"AI companion" gets 40,500 searches a month. But when you look at what people are actually typing, the demand splits across a bunch of specific use cases.

AI gaming companion - 480 searches last month, 23 months of year-over-year growth.

AI companion for seniors - 320/mo, 25 months of growth.

AI study companion - 390/mo.

AI mental health companion - 90/mo, 16 months of growth.

AI interview companion, ai fitness companion, ai writing companion - all being searched for.

"AI desktop companion" went from 0 searches in 2022 to 1,900/mo by November 2025. Anthropic and OpenAI have both launched desktop companion features in the last few months.

The big names like Replika are dealing with regulatory problems. OpenClaw went viral last month doing the open-source personal AI thing. Beyond that it's mostly small projects.

Why this matters for income opportunities - each of those niches is basically its own market. An AI companion for seniors and an AI gaming companion have almost nothing in common. Most of them only have a few established players.

You don't need to build the product yourself to make money from this. There are angles here for:

Content and affiliate - write reviews, comparisons, tutorials for the tools that do exist in each niche. The search demand is there and growing.

Service work - help people set up and customise AI companions for specific use cases. Seniors and accessibility is a good example.

Building something small - some of these niches are small enough that a solo dev could own one.

The pattern I keep seeing is that specific beats general. "AI companion" is a crowded term. "AI companion for seniors" with 25 months of consecutive growth is a much more interesting place to be.

I'll drop a free dataset in the comments if you want to look at more of these keywords yourself.

Cheers - Alec
