Toddler won’t take any fluid apart from nursing

12–18 Months 👶

Hoping someone has gone through something similar because I’m out of ideas!

My 13 month old came down with a horrible virus (likely adenovirus, whole house is sick 🤧) and I think it’s given him a very sore throat. Prior to this we had weaned down to ~3 breastfeeds a day (morning, afternoon, once overnight) and my supply dipped down to what felt like very little during the day, and only a real letdown first thing in the morning and overnight. He was a good eater, usually having 3 meals and 2 snacks and LOVED drinking water. Like I used to have hide his water until the end of the meal sometimes or he would fill up on water. He would also take one bottle of milk before bed.

The first 4 days he pretty much stopped eating solids but maintained his fluid intake. Then on day 5 he stopped drinking almost completely. The only way he will take fluids is through nursing, but I don’t make nearly enough milk to hydrate him. All he’s wanted to do while sick is sleep while latched and dry nurse. When we try to give him fluids in any cup or bottle or syringe he throws his head back and screams. We’ve tried: water, watered down juice, milk, formula, popsicles, applesauce, pouches, jello, watermelon, other fruit. I’ve tried letting him play with water in a low pressure environment. I’ve tried making games of it. I’ve tried reverse psychology. This kid will. Not. Drink.

We’re on day 8 now. We’ve already been to the ER twice and the doctor once. He needed IV fluids two days ago, and they told us to come back if he doesn’t pee for 12 hours but he’s just scraping by. He started eating again today and finished an entire croissant and some rice. Only wants super dry things.

Has anyone been through this before? Please tell me how you snapped your kid out of it if so 😅😂🙏🏻

Edit: after I posted this he started drinking again on his own because.... toddlers 😂 Thank you all for the advice!
