Does younger Gen z actually not read? Do y'all really think they can't?

 Questions

Personally I read a lot of books and I write my own too. Now I just got back from the bookstore with a bunch of books and an older family member asked me to show what I got. I got mostly classics this time. He said he doesn't think I'll be able to read the entire book of crime and punishment. Is the average 16 year old really expected to not be able to read crime and punishment? Literally most of my friends read. Most of them read YA but it's still reading.

Idk why most people think 15-16 year olds don't or can't read. But it could just be that it's because of my friend group that I think this way. What really baffled me tho is when some dude was like "you can really read that?" about the sloppiest YA book I've ever read. To be fair, it was in English and English isn't our first language but even for our country's standards it would probably be around the reading level of 14 year olds. So yes obviously you should be able to read it. I've written better stuff myself.

I don't think everyone has to LIKE reading but I would assume they're at least able to read at my age.
