Feeling unfulfilled as a new grad

Career Questions & Discussion

Hey all! hope everyone's week is going good. I live in Florida, and I started working as a cybersecurity engineer intern in late 2023 for one of the top 3 defense companies, and after I graduated in May 2025, I accepted a return offer for 90k with good benefits. I have a great team, manager, and WLB, but I can't help but feel empty and wanting more. This is a job that I have essentially been doing since I started working here, and the thing that has stopped me from throwing my resume out there is that I am currently in a cybersecurity engineering position, which is almost impossible as a new grad to obtain, and the job market is trash right now.

I have a 1 on 1 with my manager on Monday, and I was planning on bringing up some of my concerns with him about this. During lunch last week, he was asking if I would be interested in doing a more cyber software based role, and I have mentioned to him that I was going to reach out to have a L4 teach me about reverse engineering at work since the company offers hours for training and mentoring.

I currently have my sec+ and my job is paying for my MSCS from Georgia Tech, and any certs that I want, and I am trying my best to take advantage of these opportunities, but it currently feels like I have golden handcuffs and I won't really be able to find another similar position without having a massive downgrade in pay or title.

Any advice is appreciated! I'm not sure where to really go from here because I know that people would probably kill to be in my position, and it sounds a bit selfish to want more after all that I have been given. I am not solely looking for a pay increase, but I would like work that is more interesting than what i do now. My thinking is that it is best to wait out the job market a bit and see whats out there once I finish my masters in 3 years, since by then I should be a level 2 with 3 YOE.
