Breaking my bad habits without guilt but I CAN’T.

Need Support

I’ve been on a journey recently to break some of my own bad habits things like overconsuming caffeine and drinking more than I’d like and I’ve come to realize something really important about mental health and habits: it’s not about willpower, it’s about self-compassion.

For years, I thought that breaking habits was just a matter of having enough discipline. But the more I tried, the more I realized that this approach wasn’t just ineffective it was also damaging to my mental health. Every time I slipped up, I felt like a failure, and that guilt would make me spiral.

What I’ve learned (the hard way) is that habits aren’t just about trying harder they’re about understanding why I’m doing them in the first place. Habits, whether it’s caffeine, smoking, or anything else, often serve as coping mechanisms for stress, anxiety, or emotional pain.

For anyone here who’s been trying to break a habit, how have you approached it without overwhelming yourself? How do you manage the mental health aspect of it, especially when you experience setbacks?

Would love to hear your experiences and any tips for managing both habit change and mental health 🙏🏻
