Accidentally adding stitches with knit one purl one

very beginner knitter here trying to learn to rib.. I’ve been practicing knit one, purl one and keep winding up with extra stitches. I think I basically keep doing an accidental yo but am not sure. Anyone else have this problem at first/what am I doing wrong?
