3rd year medical student want to get his hands on research

So im currently in third year part 1 and i really wanted to get my hands on research. I want to start building my CV so that it helps me in future if i wish to pursue (PLAB/USMLE). I dont know where to start and who to approach exactly. I am pursuing my ug from a reputed college in Kolkata which is famous for its research but i don’t exactly where to start and who to approach. I did draft a proposal for ICMR STS in dept of General Surgery but it didnt get chosen. On paper mentor was a Asst. Prof he himself gave me the research question but he hardly helped me in anything because most of the times he was pretty busy. I more or leas drafted the proposal on my own (i did get it cross checked with a few pgts tho). I dont know if i should continue with that research question or find someone else and draft a new research question ( i dont mind working again).

TL;DR I want help in knowing how to get into research work as an ug. Who to approach? What are other options other than ICMR STS?
