NAS Build Advice

Question/Advice

Building a TrueNAS NAS for long term storage, server backups, and occasional media playback+transcoding. Sound-sensitive and will be kept off at night. Fast storage + compute will be nearby/in a rack. Would like a rack mountable unit but see discussion below.

While I'm settled on some parts, I'm seeking feedback on the build and other parts I'm still debating.

# TENTATIVE BUILD

- CPU: Intel Xeon E-2356G

- iGPU: Intel UHD P750

- HDDs: 8 x WD Red Plus 8TB

- Memory: 4 x OW 32 GB DDR4 ECC UDIMM 3200 MHz (128 GB total)

- Boot Drive: 1 TB Sabrent Rocket m.2 NVMe (lying around)

- Cache: 2 TB Samsung m.2 NVMe

# SEEKING RECOMMENDATIONS ON THESE PARTS

## Motherboards

Hard time finding any of these in stock, but looking for 1+ m.2 NVMe slot, 2 PCIE slots for HBA and NIC possibly, ECC and iGPU compatible, optionally IPMI. prefer mATX but could do ATX.

  1. SUPERMICRO MBD-X12STH-F-O Micro ATX Workstation Motherboard LGA 1200 Intel C256 ($356, not sure IPMI)

  2. AsRock Rack E3C252D4U Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1200 Intel C252

  3. ASUS P12R-M or P12R-E Server Motherboard

## Case/Chassis

Would prefer a smaller mATX friendly case but could also go with a rack-mount mATX or ATX chassis. Most rack NAS have far too many drives for me or will be far too loud with small fans, but I am open to it!

  1. Jonsbo N6. Worried about thermals somewhat.

  2. Silverstone CS382. Worried about thermals and maybe overkill?

  3. Sliger 3702. Has terrible airflow design for a rack so lowest.

## Other

Will need a PSU and HBA card but it will depend on the parts selected and isn't complicated.
