Why the f*ck do I owe so much damn money to NYS?

I owed 87 dollars last year on my state tax return. That's fine, but it ate at my federal return. But this year, I get 21$ from my federal return and I owe 285 DOLLARS TO NYS!??!? WHY? And just to kick you while you're down, it costs a fee + tax to file NYS taxes. Am I doing something wrong? I am 20yrs old and single, is this just how it is for us?
