Staying more than 90 days ?

Hi guys,

Let me explain my situation. I'm French and I’ll be a Research Assistant in Japan this summer; it’s an internship at a university near Tokyo. I’ll be paid 400k yen for a bit less than three months. (Yeah, the pay is pretty low, but at least I’m getting paid ! Which isn’t always the case in research.)

From what I understand, the university wants to bring me in as a visiting researcher and send me the money (the university administration has approved it), so technically I could stay on a “tourist” visa.

Normally that wouldn’t be an issue, because my internship runs from mid-May to mid-August, but I have friends coming from August 20 to September 3 (basically I’d leave with them). That would mean staying around 100 to 110 days in total which is more than the 90 days.

What should I do? 😅
