What to expect from seeing a psychologist for the first time
Hello, I am 40 and for most of my life I have had metal health issues such as major anxiety and stress, was diagnosed with attendance deficit and speech impediment when I was young, ocd issues, severe lack of motivation, feeling of not being able to do things fast without getting stressed out and fumble, talk to myself and act as if I have another person or voice in my head, Also a symptom I’m not quite sure how to describe or what it could be called but the best way to describe it is when I get either excited in a good way or bad or I get very angry, I tense the muscles in my head and also open my month as wise as I can, as if I am making a silent big yell as intense and loud as I can, but again totally silently.
One of the worst parts is most of these systems has been preventing me from getting a job.
My Primary care physician has been wanting me to go to a psychologist for some time and I know I have been needing to go, just been hesitant. I am finally going to be scheduling an appointment soon, but what I am wondering is what should I expect? I feel like given my age I am kind of set in my ways and really I am not looking to do therapy classes and such in attempt change my ways, but what I am looking for and what I hope to get out of this is maybe meditation to help but ultimately have help finding and obtaining a job by means of having restrictions for a job like low anxiety, low stress and slow paced. Possibly help with disability if it’s determined that may help financially for me.
Is this all something that a psychologist will be able to help me with? Or is the approach and plan way different? I just don’t want to go into an appointment expecting something different or a different outcome and ultimately be disappointed.
Thank you!
