(No RP please) How conscious are the Automatons?

I’ve always assumed the Automatons were just the cyborgs after reaching Cyberstan and learning that they are too separate entities makes me wonder, how conscious are the Automatons? They have marching chants and a language which would be unnecessary if they were just unthinking robots, but they also can have their brains taken over by cyborgs (at least I assume that’s what it is) and they also have little reaction to their deaths (unlike the voteless) so I can’t assume their human level intelligent.
