Petition to make identity theft a police recordable crime

In the UK, if you are the victim of identity theft, you are left to report it to Action Fraud, to which you will almost certainly receive the templated response “identity theft is not a police recordable crime”, and no further action is taken.

I find myself in this exact scenario now. Someone has used my name to get millions of pounds of unsecured bridging loans and now I find myself spending tens of thousands of pounds in legal fees fighting off lenders demanding their money back in civil court.

I found this petition on the parliament website. If we spread the word and get enough signatures, the police will have the power to hold those accountable in criminal courts and give dignity to victims all over the country.
