About cologne carnival

Hello everyone, I recently arrived in Germany and heard that there is a big carnival in Cologne. I really want to attend, but I don't quite understand the concept. Is wearing any costume sufficient, or are there specific preferences? Are there any specific rules or traditions for the carnival? Could you help me with some costume ideas? Thank you in advance
