Action/adventure where “enemies” have a sense of life preservation

I’m a bit tired of series that have the equivalent of some farmers charging a heavily-armoured and battle-ready force of hell. Like it’s fine if it’s to show battling for necessity’s sake but sometimes it’s just fighting something you know you can’t beat, just for the animators to show off battling. Anyone know anything where the antagonists aren’t just nameless extras that exist to die?
