Jazz Bass or Stingray for Flea/Emo/Punk?
Yo, so I’m having a massive internal crisis and need some help. I’m basically trying to find a bass that can handle my split personality.
Half of me wants to go full Flea mode and just slap until my fingers bleed, but the other half is still stuck in 2007 listening to The Black Parade, Blink-182, and Pierce The Veil.
I’m torn between the Jazz Bass and the Stingray and honestly, I can make a case for both. Flea is the king of the Stingray for that early BSSM era punch, but then he swapped to that '61 Jazz Bass for the later stuff. Plus, Jaime from PTV uses a Stingray and that tone is absolutely massive for those heavy breakdowns.
But then you look at the pop-punk side—Mark Hoppus and Mikey Way are basically the reasons I even want to play, and that’s all J-Bass territory. I feel like a Jazz Bass might be easier for those fast down-picked riffs because the neck is so thin, but will I regret not having that active Stingray "clack" when I want to play Can't Stop?
Which one is going to be more of a "do-it-all" workhorse for someone who wants to jump from funk-rock to post-hardcore without it sounding weird? Also, if I get a Jazz, is it gonna be punchy enough for the PTV stuff, or should I just go Stingray and call it a day?
