does diagnosis count in another country?

Questions/Advice

Ok. So I’m currently studying at a university in the EU. I’ve suspected I had ADHD for a long time and have been pushing myself to succeed. It’s so painful. So painful. But I started seeing a therapist here who recommended I see a psychiatrist to get diagnosed with ADHD and depression. The appointment is in a couple weeks.

Assuming I do get diagnosed (which I feel like is super likely? My therapist seems very sure), what happens? When I finish my studies and go back to the US and potentially want to continue medication or therapy or whatever… then what? Do I have to get rediagnosed? I feel like once should be enough.

I have this weird image in my head of a little, like, ADHD certificate. (“Congrats! There’s a reason you’re like this!”) Can I hand this certificate to my doctor and just continue whatever treatment I start here?

Also, if, hypothetically, I am on my parents insurance at home but a different insurance here and also my parents don’t really believe ADHD exists… then what? This is not hypothetical I don’t know why I phrased it like that. I kind of need to keep this on the down low, if at all possible. I told them I thought I had ADHD at age 12 (fortunately extreme pressure and self loathing meant I did well in school!) but was ignored and all mental health support I’ve gotten has been through my university.

But I feel like I really really need some sort of help because the depression is getting really bad and I don’t want to burn my whole life down just because I can’t get it together. I can’t keep going at this level of effort just to live a basic human life Or worse, if I do get it together and get help and then have to go home and break down again.

Any advice would be appreciated :)))
