How deeply did you learn the kana before jumping into study?

For those who took the route of learning the kana before anything else; how drilled in your brain was it before you started grammar study etc? I’m getting to a stage where I’m recalling most of it with occasional slip ups and even less frequent complete blanks. Wondering if that’s enough and it’ll drill fully in once I start Genki which I have already bought or if I should make sure I’ve mastered it fully first? 🙏
