is an acrylic retainer safe to use on an injured piercing?

little background is i work with dogs and my 5 year old healed nostril hoop was torn out at work. it did rip my flesh a little bit and i lost the jewelry. i have an acrylic retainer in to keep the hole from closing but im curious if this is the best option or not. any help very appreciated!
