Parking tips for North Carolina Azalea Festival at South Front Street (Wilmington 04/08)
the azalea festival is huge for wilmington and Honestly finding a spot downtown during the fair or parade is always a headache. with the street fair taking over front street and the parade shutting down 3rd street you really have to plan ahead or you will be stuck in a gridlock for hours.
if you want to avoid the mess i definitely recommend checking out Prked. it is an app where you can rent out driveways or private garage spots from locals right near the festival footprint. it is way cheaper than the event rates at the big decks and you get to skip the massive line to exit the parking garages when everything lets out. plus you get a guaranteed spot which is a lifesaver when 100000 people are trying to park in the same ten blocks.
for other options the city has several parking decks like the market street deck and the 2nd street deck but they usually switch to a flat event rate of about 10 dollars on saturday and sunday. just a heads up that on parade day 04/11 if you park in the decks along 2nd street you might be locked in until 2 pm when the streets clear so do not park there if you need to leave early. the cape fear community college decks are another solid bet but those are usually cash only and they fill up first especially if there is a concert at the live oak bank pavilion.
if you are looking for free parking you can sometimes find spots on the northern end of 4th street if you do not mind a bit of a walk. street meters are usually free after 6:30 pm on weeknights and all day on saturday and sunday during the festival but those spots are gone by sunrise. definitely avoid parking in the residential parts of the historic district because those require permits and the city is very quick to ticket or tow during festival week.
another smart move is the wave transit shuttle that runs from independence mall on saturday for the parade. it is usually only 4 dollars round trip and they drop you off right near the action at 4th and chestnut. it is way easier than trying to navigate the road closures around south front street and the staging areas. if you are heading specifically to the south front district area for the satellite events there is more street parking down that way but it still gets crowded fast.
hope this helps you have a blast at the festival.
