VC Job Advice

I just got a job where i get to work for sell side and M&A deals now and then eventually move to buy side (maybe). This role is based on consumer and IT sector mainly. I wish to eventually move to consumer VC investment team. Is this a good stepping stone? Also, what should i do to ensure a role is a good consumer vc soon?
