I don't know how I stumbled upon this magnificent piece of investigative journalism. Perhaps one of the fellow Redditors had posted about it, and I'm truly thankful to them for doing so.

An absolute page-turner, this book reads like a thriller. Each chapter ends on a cliffhanger, a technique often used by web series, which works beautifully in its favour. It's simply unputdownable.

Telling the story of the Golden Triangle in Southeast Asia's drug trafficking network, the book lays bare the evolution of the opium trade in this part of the world. It explores how Mao's revolution indirectly drew the USA into the drug trade, revealing how a substantial portion of the narcotics ended up on American streets and how, to some extent, US agencies themselves were complicit.

The book chronicles the rise of a country (a self-declared independent nation within Myanmar) that once accounted for more than 90% of the world's opium trade and whose ambition for international recognition as an independent state fuelled a turf war between the CIA and the DEA and the Myanmar Junta. It also recounts how a tribe of head-hunters transformed itself into a constellation of businesses operating with the efficiency of a corporate empire.

At its core, this is the story of two individuals: an idealist striving to reform the head-hunter tribe and a prodigy who became the financial czar, channelling millions of dollars from the drug trade to sustain the economy of a narco-state called the United Wa State Army (UWSA). It's a story of the nationalist versus the rationalist, of utopia versus reality, and of substantive growth versus financial growth.

The book answers many intriguing questions, such as:

1. Why did the USA look the other way when Chinese exiles ran their drug operations from Myanmar, even though most of it ended up on American streets?

2. Why were the CIA and DEA never on the same page regarding the UWSA menace?

3. How did the Vietnam War, directly or indirectly, fuel drug trade in the Southeast Asian region?

4. Why did a DEA agent sue a CIA officer and end up receiving a $3 million settlement?

5. Why did the Golden Triangle's opium trade eventually decline, paving the way for the CIA-backed Golden Crescent to emerge as a new narco superstate?

6. What impact did 9/11 have on the Southeast Asian drug trade?

7. Why did Myanmar become the birthplace of the world's most popular illegal product, one so widespread that over 50 billion units have been produced in this century, with only 5% leaving Southeast Asia?

8. How geography shapes up the story of a nation?

This is the story of a narco-empire's transformation, from poppy planters to one of the world's largest pill manufacturers. Pick this up if the subject interests you. Though it's a true account with many stakeholders at play, rest assured, the writing is gripping, engaging and cinematic. Just keep a note sheet handy for all the real-life character names, and you'll be fine.

Narcotopia by Patrick Winn. My thoughts.
