Welcome to r/creatorownership. If you've ever lost revenue, followers, or sleep because of a platform then this is your sub.
hello Creators!
I started this community because I kept hearing the same stories.
A trading educator client of mine who lost $14K/year to Patreon fees and didn't realize it until he did the math.
A gaming creator whose Discord server got nuked, 3,000 members, two years of work, gone in an email.
A fitness coach who watched her Instagram reach drop from 10,000 per post to 300. Same content. Same audience. Different algorithm.
A creator who got banned from OnlyFans for 72 hours with no explanation. They made $22K/month on that platform. For three days, their income was zero and had no idea if it was coming back.
These aren't edge cases anymore. This is the norm.
What this sub is about
One idea: creators should own their infrastructure.
Your community. Your revenue. Your data. Your platform.
Not rented. Owned.
That means:
- You control who can access your community (not an algorithm)
- You keep 100% of your revenue (not 70-88% after platform fees)
- You can export your member list tomorrow if you want to (not locked in)
- No platform can ban you from your own business (not "subject to review")
What we talk about here
This sub is for real conversations. Not marketing fluff. Not "5 tips to grow your audience." Real talk about the stuff that actually affects your income.
Platform horror stories. Got banned? Lost reach? Had your revenue held? Had a platform change their fee structure or ToS on you? Share it. Every story here helps another creator avoid the same trap. Name the platform. Share the numbers. We don't protect companies that don't protect us.
The fee math. What are you actually paying across your entire tool stack? Most creators I talk to think they're paying $50/month. When we add up platform commissions, processing fees, Apple tax, and admin time, it's usually $500-$2,000/month. Drop your stack, we'll do the math together.
Migration stories. Moved off a platform? How'd it go? What was the attrition? How long to recover? The good, the bad, and the ugly. These stories are gold for anyone considering the same move.
Tool stack discussions. What are you using? What works? What doesn't? No shill posts — genuine "here's my setup and here's what I'd change" conversations.
The independence playbook. Strategies for reducing platform dependency. How to use social media for discovery without depending on it for revenue. Building direct relationships with your audience.
What I want to hear from you
If you're here, you've probably experienced at least one of these:
- A platform changing their rules and it costing you money
- An algorithm update that tanked your reach overnight
- The anxiety of knowing your business depends on a company that doesn't know you exist
- Paying 12-30% of your revenue to a middleman and wondering if there's a better way
- Spending hours every week on admin that should be automated (I'm looking at you, Discord-to-Patreon role verification)
Tell us what happened.
Seriously. Drop your story in this thread or make your own post. What platform burned you? How much did it cost you? What did you do about it?
No judgment here. Whether you're making $500/month or $50K/month, platform dependency hits everyone the same way.
About me
I'll be transparent: I build in this space. I'm the co-founder of a creator platform. I'll always disclose that when it's relevant.
But I started this sub because the problem is bigger than any one product. The creator economy is a $200B+ market built on infrastructure that creators don't own. That's broken. And the only way it changes is if creators start talking about it openly and demanding better.
I'm here to learn as much as I am to share. If you've found solutions — whether it's a tool, a strategy, or a mindset shift — bring it.
Sub rules
- Share real stories with real numbers. "I lost revenue" is okay. "I lost $4,200 in March because Patreon's payment processor flagged my account" is better.
- No shill posts. You can mention tools you use. You can't write an ad disguised as a post. We'll know.
- Disclose affiliations. If you build something, sell something, or get paid by something — say so. Transparency is the whole point.
- Be specific. "Platforms are bad" is boring. "Here's exactly how much Instagram's algorithm change cost me in Q4" is useful.
- Help each other. Someone shares a problem, offer a solution. Someone shares a win, celebrate it. We're all figuring this out together.
