SHM/ADHD
Hello everyone, I'm a 20 year old male from Southern Oregon and I have been diagnosed with severe Sporadic Hemiplegic Migraines and ADHD. I was looking into what can cause SHM and saw that the mutation of gene CACNA1A can potentially cause SHM and ADHD, and could also cause "leaky" ion channels in my brain allowing extra calcium into my ion channels. My migraines also rotate from either side of my brain and numbness spreads through all parts of my body, instead of just one side of my brain and one side of my body (Which is typical). This can caused by AHC (Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood) but my cognitive function outside of my migraines is just fine and always has been, so I believe it is more likely cause by leaky ion channels alone.
I have been struggling with my ADHD lately, and have previously been prescribed Methylphenidate though unfortunately I haven't seen much success. I came across an article claiming Amlodipine is good for treating SHM, and that new research (2025) shows it could theoretically help negate ADHD symptoms including impulsivity and hyperactivity.
My main focus is to help combat my migraines, however in the case that it may help both my SHM and ADHD I was wondering if it may be worth it to give this a look. Has anyone had any luck using this for either SHM or ADHD? I did see that Amlodipine primarily targets L-type channels and my genetic mutation affects P/Q-type channels, so it may not be the right fit. Anyways I am just looking for suggestions/recommendations from anyone who has dealt with something similar and found success. I am new to this so anything helps, I know this is not too common of a combination so I don't expect much. Thank you so much to those who read all of this!
