How effective are facial toners?

Toners seem to be one of the most debated steps in skincare. Some people swear they balance skin and boost hydration, while others say they’re basically optional and don’t make much difference if your cleanser and moisturizer are solid. With so many types now hydrating, exfoliating, calming it’s hard to tell what role they’re really supposed to play.

I’ve been trying to simplify my routine a bit, but I’m not sure if dropping toner would mean missing out on benefits or if it’s just habit at this point. My skin is generally combo and can get a little dull or uneven, which is why I started using one in the first place.

For those who’ve experimented with and without toners, did you notice a clear difference in texture or hydration?
Are certain types more worth it than others depending on skin concerns?

Curious to hear real experiences before I decide whether to keep it in rotation.
