Dale Chrystie’s paper, "Coopetition in Global Commerce: Why It Will Take a Pro-Competitive Global Village to Scale Blockchain," provides a strategic blueprint for how industries—specifically logistics and supply chain—must evolve to realize the potential of Web3.

His appointment as the FedEx representative on the Hedera Council aligns perfectly with the core "thoughts" and philosophies detailed in his white paper:

1. The "Coopetition" Framework
Chrystie argues that traditional business models focus too heavily on where companies compete or differentiate. He suggests a paradigm shift toward coopetition: identifying "where we can agree" to build foundational, non-competitive standards that benefit the entire ecosystem.

 * Application: Joining the Hedera Council is a literal application of this; FedEx is working alongside other global leaders (including potential competitors) to govern a shared public ledger.

2. "Open" is Inevitable
A recurring theme in the paper is that blockchain cannot scale if it remains closed or proprietary. Chrystie notes that for blockchain to be transformative, it must be "much bigger than we are".

 * Open Ethos: He advocates for an "open" strategy involving open participation, open-source protocols, and open access to outputs.

 * The "ISS View": He challenges leaders to take an "International Space Station (ISS) view"—looking at the global commerce network as a single, interconnected system rather than a series of silos.

3. Solving "Friction" in Global Trade
Chrystie identifies "friction" (delays, paper-based errors, and data silos) as the primary enemy of global commerce.

 * Data Standards: He emphasizes that blockchain’s greatest value is creating a "common language" or shared data format between shippers, carriers, and receivers.

 * Smart Contracts: He sees immense potential in self-executing agreements that automate payments and compliance, reducing the need for "middleman" intermediaries.

4. Overcoming Cultural and Legal Barriers
The paper acknowledges that the biggest hurdles aren't technical, but cultural and legal:

 * Antitrust Concerns: Many companies avoid collaboration for fear of violating antitrust laws. Chrystie argues for a clear distinction between illegal anti-competitive behavior and "pro-competitive" collaboration on standards.

 * Corporate Mindset: He urges leaders to move past the "defend the past" mentality and embrace a "team sport" approach to innovation.
Summary of Vision
Chrystie’s vision is "o-commerce" (open commerce)—a global, interoperable network where a consumer has a secure digital identity and a single "shopping cart" that works across all global marketplaces, powered by a foundation of trust that no single company owns.

His role at Hedera and leadership at BiTA (now merged with GBBC) are the primary vehicles he is using to turn these academic "thoughts" into the global industry standard.
