Mars colonies — what do you think is cliche? What do you want to see instead?

After some consideration I’m thinking of changing the main setting in my story to Mars rather than an unrelated exoplanet — the main reason being ths I want more direct action with Earth especially in terms of politics.

So Mars colonies are kind of popular in sci fi, and this got me wondering what are some under-utilised tropes with Mars colonies that you want to see done.

What do you think is under-explored environmentally, politically, and culturally? In contrast, what do you think is overdone or overemphasised?

For me, I’d like to see management of Martian regolith explored more because Martian soil really is toxic, and how that impacts things like where food comes from
