Would you use a shared workshop space instead of buying all your own equipment?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been thinking about something and wanted honest opinions from people who actually build things for a living.

As freelancers / indie builders, a lot of us end up buying tools and equipment that are expensive, bulky, and sometimes used only occasionally. CNC machines, 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics lab tools, testing equipment, even proper workbenches and storage — it adds up quickly.

What if there was a dedicated workshop space where:

  • You could walk in and use professional-grade tools without owning them
  • Expensive equipment (CNC, laser cutter, reflow station, testing gear, etc.) was available on demand
  • Common materials and components were stocked so you don’t have to source from 10 different vendors
  • You could build, prototype, test, and ship from one place
  • Maybe even collaborate with other freelancers working on hardware / physical products

Basically, a place where you focus on building — not on collecting tools.

I know coworking spaces exist, and I’ve heard of makerspaces, but I’m curious:

  • Do places like this already exist in your city?
  • If yes, what do they do well and what do they lack?
  • If not, would you realistically use something like this?
  • What would make it worth paying for?

I’m genuinely trying to understand whether this solves a real problem or if most freelancers prefer owning their own setup.

Would love to hear your thoughts.
