I Died, He Learned To Love Too Late : Read Online
Chapter 1
My husband married me to our sixty–year–old gardener… Because his parents died saving mine.
Every night, he looked at me with hatred, saying, “Sophia, you owe me three lives. Your children will repay the debt your family owes.”
So he got rid of our baby once I was pregnant, three times.
When cancer took me, he never believed in me, “Even if you die, you can only die by my hand.”
I thought death would free me.
But after I was gone, he finally recalled his love for me.
But it’s far too late.
Ethan Croft was a falconer.
And the best hawk he ever trained was his wife of five years, Sophia Miller.
“Do the handstand properly. If you don’t get pregnant this time, you won’t be sleeping for the next three days.”
Ethan’s voice, devoid of any emotion, rang out. His gaze sent a chill through Sophia’s heart; his indifferent expression was not that of a man

looking at his wife, but at an insignificant stranger.
But to him, she was probably something more hateful than a stranger.
Sophia wanted to force a self–mocking smile, but she didn’t even have an ounce of strength left.
Only her arms trembled uncontrollably, as if she could fall off the bed at any moment.
Ethan casually pulled over a chair, leisurely lit a cigarette, and his gaze flickered for a moment as it swept over Sophia’s trembling body, before quickly returning to calm.
Then he blew a smoke ring in Sophia’s face. “Sophia, why is it so satisfying to see you looking half–dead like this?”
“Tell me, when my parents died under the paws of a bear, were they in as much pain as you are now?”
Hearing this, Sophia’s lips parted.
Finally, she could only say helplessly, “I’m sorry.”
She had been married to Ethan for five years and tormented by him for five years. On any other matter, she would defend herself, but whenever his parents were mentioned, she only had one thing to say: I’m sorry.
Back then, a freshly eighteen–year–old Sophia went with her parents to the mountains for a summer retreat. The Croft family, a line of hereditary falconers, lived deep in the mountains, and that’s how the two families met.
Sophia and Ethan were friends for two months, experiencing the first stirrings of love in the prime of their youth.

The day before she was to leave the mountain, Sophia had prepared a love letter for Ethan, but before she could give it to him, her parents‘ cries for help echoed from the mountains. Ethan’s parents and
grandfather hid the two of them, grabbed a hunting rifle, and went into the mountains.
They hadn’t returned by late night.
When Ethan and Sophia found them with flashlights, they only saw a few dying bears and the bodies of Sophia’s parents.
Ethan’s family members were also on the brink of death, and after a week in the ICU, they passed away.
At first, Ethan was still gentle with her. He would accompany her to bury her parents and, in between caring for his own, bring her a steaming hot pie.
When she was so wracked with guilt she couldn’t sleep, he would hold her in his arms, stroking her long hair and saying, “It was an accident, Sophia.”
Even on the day Ethan’s parents died, he brought a soft cushion for the kneeling Sophia, saying, “Sophia, the ground is cold.”
The gentler Ethan was, the deeper Sophia’s guilt became. At her lowest point, she even considered atoning with her own life.
But on the hundredth day after Ethan’s parents‘ death, he locked himself in the backyard, lighting memorial candles all night. Sophia stayed up all night, listening to Ethan’s suppressed sobs as she sat there until morning.
After that, it was as if Ethan had become a different person.

To tie her to his side, Ethan left the mountains and worked his way up for four years. The first thing he did after securing his position as a rising high–society star in the Capital was to pull Sophia to officially register their marriage, and that very night, he tormented her repeatedly all night long.

“Sophia, I know you have no family left. In that case, your child’s life will pay for the lives of my parents and my grandfather.”
Even now, Sophia could still remember the surging hatred in Ethan’s eyes when he said those words.
And he did exactly that.
He would torture Sophia day and night, deliberately pulling back just before he finished, forcing her to do a handstand to increase the chances of pregnancy. Ethan pushed her from an initial three minutes to ten, then half an hour…
Like taming a hawk, he wore her down day after day.
Wearing down her body, wearing down the last remnants of her love for him.
In five years of marriage, she had lost two children, each time without anesthesia. The more wretched she looked coming off the operating table, the more pleasure Ethan took in it.
Her thoughts returned to the present as Ethan finished his cigarette.
He stubbed out the cigarette butt and glanced at the watch on his wrist: “Another half hour, and your task for today will be complete.”
“Ethan.”

Sophia called out to Ethan as he was about to leave, her voice trembling uncontrollably from exhaustion. Tears slid from the corners of her eyes, mingling with the thin sheen of sweat on her forehead. Though her body was pushed to its absolute limit, she felt her heart was even more exhausted.
“I don’t want to get pregnant anymore. I don’t want any more abortions. Please, let me go, and let the innocent children go too, okay?”
Her voice was humbled to the dust.
She stayed by Ethan’s side, letting him torture her, because she knew she owed the Croft family, and so she was willing to atone.
She’d had clear chances to escape, but she didn’t leave. The reason was love.
She loved Ethan. She loved the Ethan from that summer when she was eighteen, who taught her to climb trees and catch cicadas; she loved the one who knocked on her window in the middle of the night to take her to a higher mountaintop to watch the sunrise; she loved the one who, despite clearly not knowing the way down the mountain, still carried her on his back without a second thought, rushing toward the foothills, toward the bustling city, all because she wanted a bite of cotton candy.
More than that, she knew that Ethan had once truly, deeply loved her too. But now, it was clear neither of them had the strength to love
anymore.
“Let you go?”
Ethan sneered, his eyes filled with a desolate hatred: “If you hadn’t insisted on going up the mountain to escape the summer heat back then, how would we have ever met your family?

If your parents hadn’t insisted on going into the mountains alone, how would my family have died under a bear’s claws trying to save them?”
“The Miller family owes me three lives, and so far it’s only been two children. You want me to let you go? Fine. Then you go die!
Sophia, pay it back with your own life!”
Ethan’s eyes were red–rimmed, and his breathing grew heavy.
Then came the heavy slam of the door.
Sophia pressed her cracked lips together, at once crying and laughing. She really was dying.
Under Ethan’s daily torment, she was sleep–deprived, malnourished, and so thin it seemed a gust of wind could blow her away. Now, she had cancer, with only half a month left to live.
In half a month, all the grudges and love between her and Ethan would dissipate…
