Kanji readings - what’s the benefit for beginners

I’ve been trying to learn some of the kanji - trying out WaniKani etc - and though I understand why it helps to learn the radicals and the kanji meanings, I’m struggling to understand why learning the *kanji readings* is helpful to my (basic) Japanese. Learning the vocabulary readings is obviously helpful. Is there a context - for beginners - where learning kanji readings get used?
