90's or earlier mecha anime

I'm looking for the name of an anime series watched in the (early) 90's as a kid. However I only have limited and vague memories about it.

The series is about a mecha pilot who uses his mecha/armor to fight and defend earth from an enemy force launched in space. Battles take place in space, not on earth (as far as I've seen).

At some point, the protagonist suffers an accident of sorts making him incompatible with his suit. Forcing him to use an "in between suit", an armor he has to get into in order to be able to activate his original one. It does come at great pain and strain to fight in this matter.

Amongside him there is a minimal team of only a few that support them from their base.

The way I remember the suit it was a stylish, shaped around the body suit (Gundam Wing: Leo) rather then a squared, industrial suit (Gundam 00: Tieran)

I know it's not mutch 😅 But hopefully there is someone out there that can use it to figure it out. Thanks in advance for the effort 👍
