If I buy a digital xbox card can it be redeemed by someone in canada

For context, I am in America my friend is in Canada.

I want to give them a giftcard for their birthday to be able to buy a skin in overwatch they want without ruining the surprise, I am just worried that if I buy a card while in america it won't work for them due to currency differences.

If that option doesn't work what are other options possibly?
