My PC randomly stops displaying and I have to reseat GPU/CMOS/RAM to fix it — what could be causing this?
Hey everyone, I’m trying to figure out a recurring display problem with my PC and hoping for some insight.
Specs:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7500F
- RAM: 16GB x2, 6000MHz, EXPO
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT
- PSU: Corsair CX650
- Monitor: Asus TUF Gaming VG259Q5A 24.5", Fast IPS, 200Hz
Here’s the situation:
- First occurrence:
- I slept my PC overnight. When I tried to wake it up, the monitor displayed nothing.
- I was connected via HDMI at the time.
- After reseating my GPU, CMOS, and RAM, the PC displayed again, and I switched to DisplayPort.
- Second occurrence (a week or two later):
- I tried switching back to HDMI, but the display didn’t come back.
- I reseated the GPU first → didn’t work.
- Then GPU + CMOS → still no display.
- Finally, GPU + RAM + CMOS → it worked.
Other notes:
- Randomly, my monitor sometimes shuts down and shows “no signal,” and I have to power cycle the monitor to get it back.
- GPU fans not spinning at boot seems normal for me, but the system is otherwise alive (Caps Lock toggles, keyboard lights, motherboard LEDs on, CPU fans spinning).
- This has happened twice, both times seemingly triggered by either waking from sleep or switching inputs between HDMI and DP.
- I have my work laptop connected to the same monitor. I noticed that before, my system and monitor can auto-detect to switch to my DP when i shut down my work laptop. Now, it doesnt display anything when I turn my PC on and the input display is still on HDMI, even after switching to DP input on my monitor. I have to force shut down my PC, then switch my monitor input to DP, then turn it on.
Question:
What could be causing this? GPU initialization issue, monitor handshake problem, BIOS/EXPO settings, or something else? Any advice on preventing this from happening again would be appreciated.
