I see a lot of people here worried about surveillance, censorship, and monopolies. We talk a lot about resistance, but we often ignore the corporations that have built a digital surveillance network that is effecting every aspect of our lives.

If you are still using Google for everything (Search, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, YouTube), you are literally the product being sold.

Why Socialists Should Care (The "Why")

1. You are the worker, not the customer. Google's profit comes from extracting your data. That data is the "raw material" they exploit to sell advertising. Every search you make, every place you drive, is labor you are doing for free to enrich shareholders.

2. Breaking the Monopoly. Capitalism hates competition. Google, Amazon, and Meta want to own the entire internet. By using alternatives, you are voting against the consolidation of capital. You are keeping the digital "means of production" in the hands of the many, not the few.

3. Solidarity and Pricing. Google tracks your intent to buy things and shares that data with sellers. That flight price going up after you searched for it? That's algorithmic price discrimination. Stop feeding the algorithm.

4. Class Unity. When we all use the same corporate platforms, we are siloed and monitored. When we move to open, federated, or independent platforms, we build infrastructure that we control, not the bosses.

5. Complicity in Genocide. This one is heavy but we have to talk about it. Investigative reporting has revealed that the data infrastructure and AI tools provided by Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have been directly used by the Israeli military to enable mass surveillance and targeting in Gaza . Systems like "Lavender" and "Where's Daddy?"—an automated program that alerts the military when a marked individual enters their family home—rely on cloud services and data analytics supplied by these tech giants . Microsoft's Azure platform was used to store intercepted phone calls of millions of Palestinians, and Google's Project Nimbus contract includes clauses that prevent the company from restricting how Israel uses its technology, even if it violates their own terms of service . A UN Special Rapporteur has explicitly named these companies as enablers of what she calls an "economy of genocide" . When we fund Google and Microsoft with our data and our usage, we are bankrolling the infrastructure of apartheid and occupation. De-Googling is an act of solidarity with Palestine.

How to Start (The "How")

You don't need to be a tech wizard. You don't need to "go off the grid." You just need to replace your tools. Do it one step at a time.

Step 1: The Browser (The easiest win)

· The Problem: Chrome is Google's spyware.

· The Fix: Download Firefox or Brave.

· The Action: Set it as your default browser. Import your bookmarks. Done.

Step 2: The Search Engine

· The Problem: Google Search tailors results to manipulate you.

· The Fix: Use DuckDuckGo (private) or Kagi (paid, no ads).

· The Action: Change your default search engine in Firefox/Brave to DuckDuckGo.

Step 3: The Maps (The scary one, but doable)

· The Problem: Google Maps tracks your location history permanently.

· The Fix: Use Organic Maps or OsmAnd.

· The Action: Download a map of your city/state while on WiFi. Now you have GPS that works offline and doesn't report back to corporate HQ.

Step 4: The Mail

· The Problem: Google reads your email to sell ads.

· The Fix: Proton Mail (Swiss, encrypted) or Tuta.

· The Action: Set up a free account. Forward your important mail there. Slowly change your accounts to the new address.

Step 5: The Video

· The Problem: YouTube's algorithm is designed to radicalize and addict.

· The Fix: NewPipe (Android) or Freetube (Desktop) or Unwatched (iOS).

· The Action: These apps let you watch YouTube videos without an account, without comments (mostly), and without a recommended feed trying to manipulate you.

TL;DR:

You don't have to do it all today. Just start. Replace Chrome with Firefox this week. Try DuckDuckGo for a few searches. See how it feels to not be watched. And remember: every time you use these tools, you're either funding the surveillance economy or you're building something better. Free Palestine. Break the monopoly. De-Google.

De-Googling your phone isn't just "paranoia." It's a an act of resistance.
